Two Italian police officers were shot and wounded outside the prime minister’s office in Rome on Sunday. The incident took place just a kilometer away from the place where the new premier Enrico Letta was being sworn. The swearing in ceremony was going on at the time of the incident.

Police said that it is not clear whether the attacker was unemployed or was he linked to the launch of the new government at a time of deep political divisions. Social tensions in Italy have worsened as the euro zone’s third largest economy is facing a long slump.
