US Ambassador and three Americans losses life in Islamist attack in Libya

In what has came up as a shock    to both US and Libyan authorities, US Ambassador to Libya and three fellow American had been killed in an attack on the US Embassy in Benghazi. The attack is said to have taken place following the peoples’ anger over what is understood   to be a film made by amateur American filmmaker not depicting Prophet Mohammed in the right light and uploaded the same on YouTube, said the Libyan officials.

Libyan authorities also said that Ambassador Chris Stevens was stuck between the enraged mobs when he went to help other consulate staff to be able to exit the consulate premises safely. It was then that he too got stuck between the mobs and was attacked by rocket propelled grenades and guns.

In the picture shared below you can see the body of Ambassador Chris Stevens who was not identified till then but his body was evacuated with the help of some neutral Libyans and later confirmed by an eyewitness to be that of US Ambassador Chris Stevens. It was not long ago when Chris Stevens has joined as US Ambassador to Libya and about six months later the news of his death was flashing on news channels across the world. It was the deputy interior minister for eastern Libya Wanis al-Sharaf; Benghazi security chief Abdel-Basit Haroun; and Benghazi city council and security official Ahmed Bousinia who have confirmed the news of the US Ambassador and three Americans death.

Hillary Clinton confirmed the deaths later in a statement and President Obama expressed his grief over the incident while reiterating his stance of not letting the culprits go away with the incident. Preparations for taking the bodies of Chris Stevens and other Americans has been made with a help of special flight to Tripoli from whereon the bodies are going to be taken further  to US in an another aircraft.

From the reports published in official news agency of Libya, LANA, Libya’s ruling government has condemned the attack in strong voice and had promised to trace and suitably punish the perpetrators of cruel crackdown. Leaving the Tuesday’s incident apart, five US Ambassadors have been killed while doing their duty on foreign soil. Adolph Dubs was the last US Ambassador to have lost his life in Afghanistan in the year 1979.

It is important to note here that these kinds of attacks in Cairo and Benghazi have taken place for the first time on US diplomatic envoys. It also took US by surprise as US played a helping hand to the rebels to oust authoritarian rulers like Muammar Gaddafi and Hosni Mubarak only recently.

In his career Chris Stevens has been to Libya twice on diplomatic missions with being in Libya during the time of revolt against Gaddafi.

He got the coveted position of US Ambassador to Libya by the senate in the beginning of the year.
