Maruti to include bigger cars in its portfolio to enhance market share

After Ertiga has been a runaway success, Maruti has been thinking of expanding its portfolio in the SUV/MUV/Sedan category. Where Indian auto market has been really competitive, Maruti have biggies like Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata, and Toyota that have already been putting up a brave fight for each other.


According to a report by Economic Times, Maruti is working towards launching a face lifted version of mid-sized SX4 under the codename YL1. Grand Vitara, SX4 crossover and compact SUV XA Alpha are also some compacts under development by the Maruti Suzuki R&D team.

About the XA Compact that had been a part of the Maruti stall at Delhi Expo, 2012, it may soon be launched by Maruti in 2015. It is also the India based R&D department that is going to be working on the concepts’ development and optimize it for the Indian conditions.

One of the company’s official said on condition of anonymity “There is greater confidence in the Indian unit’s development capabilities. The R&D centre, led by IV Rao, has managed to come out with variants without much support from Japan,” He also pointed out,  “XA Alpha will be the first product out of the full-fledged R&D centre at Manesar,”

For Grand Vitara assembly in India, Maruti is conducting feasibility study for the same and if it receives the approval of the management, M&M XUV and Skoda Yeti are going to be one of its competitors.  Going forward, M&M is going to be the archrival for Maruti and is going to face the maximum heat following the launch of these concepts. Ertiga is already eating away the market share of Xylo with Grand Vitara giving competition to XUV 500, the Scorpio’s market share is however going to be the target of XA Alpha.
