Pussy Riot draws international support for protesting against Russian Prez

Soon after the band members of Pussy Riot have been arrested following their concert in the church in Russia, protests all over the world have started to crop up in favor of the three band members’ release. The protests however could not turn fruitful as the band is found guilty on hooliganism charges and sentenced for two years. The controversy cropped up after the band performed a “Punk Prayer” through a traditional intercession prayer as used in orthodoxy asking Virgin Mary to expel Putin. The prayer was a satire sung wearing short skirts in the Russian Orthodox Church.

After the band members were arrested in February, demonstrations and protests have been taking place ever since. Global artists have also been showing solidarity with the band with artists like Madonna came bare backed displaying her support. Sting, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Franz Ferdinand and Peter Gabriel are also among the list of popular artists supporting Pussy Riot. As more and more people from the west are showing solidarity with the band, Russian nationalists has warned that it can execute the band for making defamatory statements against the church.

The bright colored balaclavas worn by the troupe is now being used by the protesters vouching for the bands release. It’s important to understand the evils; the band is trying to face in Russia. Since, the number of people in Russian subscribing to conservative opinion stands at roughly 65 percent. The band had to choose the venue for precisely the same reason in order to make their voice heard. Had not the Church taken an active interest in the politics, Pussy Riot would not have chosen the place for staging their satire.

The need for international community to monitor the situation requires high priority as chances are high in Russia that the band maybe awarded a prison sentence of maximum 7 years in order to make other protesters condemning the Putin government to lie low. Putin may also try to strike a deal with the Church in order to get the band punished despite widespread protests over the decision.
